This week we hosted our annual Brent Holocaust Memorial Day Seminar. We welcomed 120 Year 10 History students from local schools; St Gregory’s RC, Newman Catholic College, Capital City Academy, and Preston Manor High. They were joined by 20 of our Year 10 students as well as a small number of Sixth Formers, who have visited Poland, to help run workshops.
Renee Salt and Ray Hill are our annual guest speakers and once again their talks had a significant impact on all the students present.
Renee Salt is a Holocaust survivor who spoke of her experiences whilst showing clips of a BBC documentary made around her return to her home in recent years. One visiting student was so moved by her story that he needed to sit on the side to get himself together again.
Ray Hill is a former member of the National Front who became a police informant. He spoke about his life’s work fighting against fascism and racism.
Overall the event once again proved very successful in forging links with our local schools and providing further insight into the history of the Holocaust and the importance of keeping the youth in society informed of events that must never happen again.
