The Governors of the School have a range of duties and responsibilites laid down in education and charity law. These range over most aspects of school life, from student admissions and staff appointments to the finanaces of the School and of course the educational provision of the School. Governors are nominated by the United Synagogue, our Foundation Body and Brent Local Education Authority. Parents and staff are entitled to elect representatives to the Governing Body. The Headteacher sits ex officio as a member of the Governing Body.
Parent governors are elected by the parents of the School. Their primary role is to act as a channel of communication between parents and the Governing Body and to ensure that the views of parents are taken into account in the deliberations of the Governing Body. All parent governors participate fully in the various committees of the Governing Body. Parent governors may assist in the resolution of concerns raised by parents, which arise from time to time. There are four parent governor positions, filled by Judith Bernstein, Michal Doron-Mass and Michael Lee, with currently one vacancy. The parent governors already elected serve a three year term of office until August 2011. In addition to the elected parent governors, the United Synagogue (as the Foundation Body for JFS) nominates 12 governors, the Local Authority nominates one governor, the teachers elect two governors and the non teaching staff elect one governor.
US nominees are Karen Benedyk, Richard Cohen, Richard Del Monte, Judith Freedman (Vice-Chair of Governors), Michael Glass, David Horowitz and Professor Lorraine Sherr, who are all parents of students at the School. Rabbi Daniel Roselaar is a former Head Boy; Philip Bunt and Chairman of Governors, Russell Kett, are parents of former students of the School. Susie Gorney and Rabbi Mark Silkoff are teacher governors. Gill Golding is the staff governor and Richard Martyn is a Brent nominated governor.
The Governing Body has a number of standing committees:-
