The Maths Department endeavours to:

  • Enable all students to experience, enjoy and become competent in the rich variety of mathematics both within the National Curriculum and at AS and A2 levels.
  • Assist students towards: mathematical thinking, an understanding of individual areas of mathematics and their inter-relationships.
  • Help students to develop their analytical abilities to recognise how to apply mathematics to solve problems, and to experience pleasure and excitement from fruitful and practical use of these abilities.
  • Identify and use mathematical approaches in real-life applications for students: - Employment (e.g. commerce, engineering, media) - Academic - as a primary language in natural and social sciences - Arts - visual arts, music - Democracy - analysis and evaluation of information and arguments
  • Develop students’ awareness of key mathematical developments throughout history as being among the greatest of human endeavours.

Specific Course Requirements

This is a 2-year course with all 3 examinations at the end of Year 11. Mock exams will take place in the summer of year 10 and in January of Year 11.

Course Content

There are 2 tiers of entry, Higher and Foundation.

Sets  1, 2, 3 and 4 will take all exams at the Higher tier.
Grades available: A*, A, B, C, and D.

Set 5 will take a mixture of Foundation tier and Higher tier exams.
Grades available: A (dependent on combination of units taken), B, C, D, E, F and G.

Set 6 will take all Foundation tier exams.
Grades available: C, D, E, F and G.


A student’s overall grade depends on the total of all marks scored, not on the tier of entry. There is no coursework element for GCSE Mathematics.
The breakdown of the course is as follows:

30%     Unit 1, Mainly Statistics and Probability. (Calculator exam)
30%     Unit 2, Number, Algebra and Geometry. (No calculator exam)
40%     Unit 3, Number, Algebra and Geometry.  (Calculator exam)
