Pupil Premium and Catch-Up

Pupil Premium

Pupil Premium funding is a government initiative designed to target resources to those pupils deemed to be from a disadvantaged background.  Specifically, the Pupil Premium money is for those pupils who have been on Free School Meals (FSM) at any point over the past 6 years (Ever6) or those children who have been looked after continuously for at least 6 months (CLA).

Aims for the Pupil Premium Grant

The aim of the Pupil Premium is to identify and implement strategies that help to increase social mobility and reduce the attainment gap between the most and least disadvantaged pupils nationally.

Barriers pupils eligible for the Pupil Premium Grant face

The barriers and challenges disadvantaged pupils face are complex and varied. We know from our experience that there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution to this and we treat each pupil individually. We have identified several barriers that most disadvantaged pupils face our our context. These are:

  • Low levels of prior attainment on entry to secondary school.
  • Lower levels of attendance and punctuality.
  • Lower levels of ambition for progression to university of apprenticeships.
  • Higher levels of emotional and well-being support needed.
  • Fewer enriching experiences outside our local community.

Catch-Up Funding (COVID)

The government announced £1 billion of funding to support children and young people to catch up lost time after school closure. This is especially important for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged backgrounds. Schools should use this funding for specific activities to support their pupils to catch up for lost teaching over the previous months, in line with the curriculum expectations.  While schools can use their funding in a way that suits their cohort and circumstances, they are expected to use this funding for specific activities which will help pupils catch up on missed education.
