Ivrit
Key Stage 3
At JFS, the teaching of Modern Hebrew is guided by the ethos:
“JFS teaches Ivrit not only as a modern foreign language, but also as a vehicle linking Jewish heritage and practice to Israel.”
This principle shapes a curriculum that fosters both linguistic skills and a meaningful connection to Jewish identity and Israeli culture.
Students enter the Ivrit programme in Year 7 with a range of prior experience. To support this, we assess each student before they join, enabling us to place them in one of four pathways tailored to different starting points—from complete beginners to fluent readers. This ensures that every student has access to a curriculum that is appropriately challenging and engaging.
Our KS3 curriculum follows a thematic, immersive approach with a strong focus on spoken language from the outset. Students develop skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, all while exploring relevant and engaging topics. For learners with advanced skills, we offer an accelerated track, providing the opportunity to complete GCSE Ivrit by the end of Year 9.
The popularity and success of the subject are reflected in the growing number of students choosing Ivrit at both GCSE and A level, including many non-native speakers. Lessons are designed to be interactive and purposeful, preparing students for real-life communication and a deeper cultural appreciation.
Beyond language skills, students explore Israeli society, history, and traditions, including national celebrations like Yom Ha’atzmaut and Jewish festivals. Authentic materials such as songs, texts, and media clips enrich learning and support cultural understanding.
Studying Ivrit allows students to:
Communicate in a living language spoken in Israel and Jewish communities worldwide.
Develop core language skills in meaningful, real-world contexts.
Engage with Jewish and Israeli traditions, culture, and identity
Build a strong Hebrew vocabulary linked to festivals, family life, and everyday experiences.
By the End of KS3, Students Will Be Able To:
Understand and respond to spoken and written Ivrit in familiar contexts.
Speak with increasing fluency, using accurate vocabulary and sentence structures.
Write in Hebrew script, producing clear, structured short texts.
Read a variety of materials, including signs, dialogues, and short stories.
Demonstrate cultural awareness of Israeli life, geography, music, food, and key Jewish festivals.
By the end of KS3, Year 9, students will have explored topics such as:
Self-introduction and family
School life and daily routine
Hobbies and leisure
Shopping, food, and health
Israeli geography and customs
The KS3 Ivrit curriculum at JFS provides students with the confidence, knowledge, and cultural insight to continue their language journey and engage meaningfully with the wider Jewish world.
Key Stage 4
The GCSE in Ivrit has been developed to help students of all abilities progress and develop a passion for Ivrit and learn about Israel through engaging content and the development of language skills.
For those with a talent for languages, acquiring others will be easier after the sound foundation of the GCSE course. GCSE Ivrit language qualifications also contribute toward the English Baccalaureate.
